LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., completed the most impressive five-day run in the three-year history of the Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of Bowling Wednesday, earning the top qualifying position for the PBA World Championship and earning an unprecedented fifth consecutive television finals berth.

Rash, a 29-year-old four-time PBA Tour champion, averaged 234.03 over 40 games bowled on five different lane conditioning patterns at South Point Bowling Center to finish with 9,361 pins and earn a $5,000 bonus as top qualifier by 296 pins over Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich.

“I’ve got my foot down and I’m going full force,” Rash said. “There are so many great players here, you can’t let up. If you think positive, positive things will happen. You need to avoid the negativity. With this (40-game) format, you have to have that mindset.”

Rash, who qualified for the Bayer Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and GEICO Shark Open finals the previous four days, is the first player to reach more than three television finals in a World Series. He will be among the 16 players who now advance to a series of four divisional elimination rounds in determining the PBA World Championship winner.

In each divisional final, named in honor of past PBA World Champions Don Carter, Billy Hardwick, Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby, four players will bowl one game with the lowest-scoring player eliminated. The three surviving players will bowl a second game, again eliminating the low score. The two survivors will then bowl a game to decide who advances to the PBA World Championship finals which will follow the same format.

All five PBA World Championship rounds will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 19, in a special arena lanes setup at South Point, starting at 10:30 a.m. PT. The telecasts will air on ESPN on five consecutive Sundays except Christmas Day (Dec. 11, 18, Jan. 1, 8 and 15) at 1 p.m. ET.

First prize in the 2011 PBA World Championship is $50,000.

The World Series of Bowling will take a break Thursday. Competition resumes Friday with the All Region South Point Open and Carmen Salvino Classic Tour Qualifying Round, followed by a special PBA West Region Member/Non-Member Doubles event Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Competition for PBA Tour players resumes Monday with Carmen Salvino Classic qualifying rounds.

All preliminary rounds of World Series competition are being webcast live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel. To subscribe, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo.

LAS VEGAS - Bowling fans will be seeing a lot of four-time PBA Tour champion Sean Rash on ESPN this season.

Rash continued his unprecedented PBA World Series of Bowling streak Tuesday, qualifying for his fourth consecutive television final at South Point Bowling Center. With his third-place finish in the GEICO Shark Open, the Montgomery, Ill., resident has qualified for the ESPN-televised finals in all four animal pattern tournaments – Bayer Viper Open, Chameleon Open, Scorpion Open and the Shark Open.

Rash finished the tournament with a 3,238 14-game pinfall (231.3 average) and had games of 243, 222, 209, 230, 214 and 247 in Tuesday’s six-game final round to secure his berth in the TV finals.

“I have everything working together right now,” Rash said. “Physically and mentally I’m in the right place and Brunswick has given me great equipment.”

Asked about the challenge of competing on four different conditions over four days, Rash said it’s all in the preparation.

“Every day is a different day and having a game plan for each day really becomes important in the World Series,” he said. “That’s going to help put yourself in a position to win and it has worked great so far.”

Thirteen-time Tour champion and defending PBA World Championship winner Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, led the Shark qualifying and will be making his first World Series television final after posting a 3,297 pinfall total (235.5 average). He had games of 226, 290, 268, 176, 227 and 268 Tuesday night.

“I really haven’t been bowling up to expectations,” Barnes said. “I’ve been way off the pace and needed to get out of the block much better. It was important for me to make this show and get some momentum going into the last round of the World Championship.”

Also making the Shark Open finals were Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte, who finished second with a 3,251 pinfall, making his second television final and reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., who finished fourth with 3,190 pins to make his first final. The Shark Open finals will be taped by ESPN on Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. PT.

The World Series of Bowling is webcast live on pba.com’s exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. Special one-day and World Series of Bowling subscription packages are available on pba.com.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., dominated the first 32 games of the PBA World Series of Bowling and will lead the field of 53 survivors into the cashers’ round of the PBA World Championship, the Professional Bowlers Association’s first major championship of the 2011-12 season, Wednesday at South Point Bowling Center.

Rash, a 29-year-old four-time PBA Tour title winner, averaged 239.81 over four eight-game rounds on the PBA’s Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark lane conditioning patterns for a total of 7,674 pins and a 314-pin lead over Australia’s Jason Belmonte. Rash, who has already qualified among the top four for the ESPN television finals in the Bayer Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion Open events, ranked second in the Shark field heading into Tuesday night’s final six qualifying games, and needs to remain among the top 16 after Wednesday’s final eight-game round of PBA World Championship qualifying to advance to an unprecedented five consecutive PBA World Series of Bowling telecasts.

Defending PBA World Champion Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, also advanced to the cashers’ round, sitting in 12th place after 32 games.

Following Wednesday morning’s final round, the top qualifier will earn a $5,000 bonus and the top 16 will advance to a series of divisional elimination rounds named in honor of past PBA World Champions Don Carter, Billy Hardwick, Johnny Petraglia and Mike Aulby. In each divisional final, the highest of four seeded player (based on their qualifying totals) will select the lane condition and all four will bowl one game with the lowest-scoring player eliminated. The three surviving players will bowl a second game, again eliminating the low score. The two survivors will then bowl a game to decide who advances to the PBA World Championship finals which will follow the same format.

All five PBA World Championship rounds will be contested on Saturday, Nov. 19, in a special arena lanes setup at South Point. The telecasts will air on ESPN on five consecutive Sundays except Christmas Day (Dec. 11, 18, Jan. 1, 8 and 15) at 1 p.m. ET.

Wednesday’s cashers’ round (and all other World Series preliminaries) will be webcast live on pba.com’s exclusive online bowling channel, Xtra Frame. Special one-day and World Series of Bowling subscription packages are available on pba.com.

First prize in the 2011 PBA World Championship will be $50,000. If reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi or 13-time PBA Tour titlist Tommy Jones should happen to win the event, the PBA Triple Crown club will have its seventh member.

Australian two-hander Jason Belmonte is hoping to qualify for his second World Series of Bowling television final by taking the early lead in the GEICO Shark Open Tuesday at South Point.

Belmo fired a 1,897 eight-game pinfall (237.1 average) to lead Tuesday’s first squad by 55 pins over 13-time Tour champion and 2010 PBA World Championship winner Chris Barnes in second.

Belmo, who has already made the TV finals for the Chameleon Open, and Barnes are a virtual lock to advance to tonight’s final qualifying round which will advance 16 players after this afternoon’s second qualifying block. After the final round the top four will be determined for the Shark Open ESPN taping at 8 p.m. PT on Nov. 18.

“I think it comes down to patience,” Belmonte said. “When the lanes come to you, you take advantage. That’s what guys around the world do.

“The Shark pattern forces you to play farther left, which is where I like to play. You couldn’t swing the ball. You had to play a little tighter line. I was patient and waited for lanes to come to me. They did, I saw it and took advantage.

“I didn’t start so well (on the Viper pattern Saturday), but I led on the Chameleon and yesterday I was a pin or two away from making the cut, so I’m very happy with the way things are going. This is a brutal tournament. It’s quick, it’s short, but it’s the same for all of us, so when you get a chance, you take it advantage.”

Belmonte tied for 75th on the Viper pattern, led Sunday’s Chameleon Open qualifying and finished 20th in the Scorpion round Monday. After 24 games, he was seventh on the PBA World Championship qualifying list.

After this afternoon’s second eight-game qualifying block the top 53 players will advance to the World Championship cashers round on Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m.

Barrett, who currently ranks fifth on the European Bowling Tour points list, won his first PBA title in a regional tournament in Reno last weekend on his way to the World Series.

“I came here to win one of these tournaments,” Barrett said. “Winning the regional gave me a lot of confidence. This is going to be my first (PBA) show and I couldn’t be happier.

“The key to my success so far has been taking advantage of every minute of practice time I’ve had since I’ve been here to work on everything from making adjustments to selecting the right ball.”

Rash earned his third straight television final, and fortified his lead after 24 games of PBA World Championship qualifying.

Rash, who has already qualified for the ESPN televised finals of the Bayer Viper Open and Chameleon Open, had a 1,870 eight-game pinfall total in the morning qualifying round.

“Having already made two TV shows helps loosen up your arm swing,” he added. “I’ve bowled well in all three World Series events and the All-In Showdown. All you ever want to do is give yourself a chance to win. If you give yourself enough chances, you’ll win and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

With the conclusion of Monday’s eight-game Scorpion qualifying round, the fourth and final animal pattern is tomorrow’s GEICO Shark Open. After the Shark round, the top 53 players based on 32 games will advance to Wednesday’s eight-game PBA World Championship cashers round.
LAS VEGAS – Four-time PBA Tour champion Sean Rash averaged 233.75 for his first eight qualifying games Monday in the Scorpion Open to ensure himself a shot at a third straight television final, and he fortified his lead after 24 games of PBA World Championship qualifying.

Rash, who has already qualified for the ESPN televised finals of the Bayer Viper Open and Chameleon Open, had a 1,870 eight-game pinfall total with games of 233, 220, 246, 253, 255, 207 and 209.

“I feel good. I’ve been bowling overseas and have been very close to winning,” Rash said. “I have some great guys from Brunswick behind me, giving me great advice. If I make a mistake, they make sure I don’t do it a second time.

Four-time PBA Tour champion Sean Rash averaged 233.75 for his first eight qualifying games Monday morning in the Scorpion Open to ensure himself a shot at a third straight television final, and he fortified his lead after 24 games of PBA World Championship qualifying.

Six players from the country of Bahrain, competing in their first World Series and are getting the competitive bowling experience of a lifetime.

34-year-old Fawaz Abdullah is in contention to advance to tonight’s final Round of 16 by finishing eighth after the first block with a 1,797 eight-game pinfall that included games of 175, 193, 215, 222, 237, 240 and 300. He rolled 20 straight strikes in the last two games.

The Bahrainian contingent is coached by former Tour player and three-time World Bowler of the Year Tim Mack.

“I always have problems getting started,” Abdullah said. “But I’m gaining a lot of confidence as the tournament progresses. With Tim’s help I’m getting better with making adjustments and making the right ball changes.

“You can see their confidence level growing exponentially,” Mack said of the Bahrainian players. “They have the ability—all they’re lacking is experience and that’s what they’re getting here.”

B squad bowls its eight-game block this afternoon after which the field will be but to 16 players who will advance to a final six-game round to determine the four television finalists for the Scorpion Open.

After the conclusion of yesterday’s Chameleon Open Rash led qualifiers for the PBA World Championship which will ultimately take the top 16 players to the elimination finals at the conclusion of the animal pattern events.

Scott the Engineer of The Howard Stern Show bowled in the WSOB last year at South Point. This year he wasn’t able to bowl, but he is watching on Xtra Frame and doing a blog throughout.

After the first two rounds of the PBA World Championship some interesting stories are developing. I think the first one is that six different countries are represented in the top ten which gives the word “world” true meaning. I have always thought American bowlers to be the best in the world, I know there have been international players on the tour for many years, but I think the overall level of competition at the WSOB from the international players is now equal to the Americans.

The next story I like is the upcoming final of the Chameleon Open. I’m sure everyone remembers “bottlegate”. How exciting will it be if we see Jason Belmonte and Sean Rash matched up in the final. This has the makings to be one of the best matches in a long time. I think I’ll look through my sound effects library and see what I can come up with to help these guys. Stay tuned.

And finally, can anyone stop Sean Rash? The term “In The Zone” describes where Sean’s game is right now. He was within a solid 9 pin from winning the All-in Showdown, he’s in the final 4 for the Viper and Chameleon Opens, and he’s leading the World Championship with a 245 average. I was able to get to know Sean pretty well from the time I spent at the WSOB last year – he spent time giving me recommendations on how to improve my game – something he didn’t have to do that I appreciated very much. I think everyone knows the amount of talent Sean has, and he certainly brings an intensity we haven’t seen in a long time, but now he’s stepped up his game to an amazing level – maybe it’s the new Brunswick gear he’s using! I know I’ll be watching him the rest of the way, I hope you do to.
